New!
For SWL's using longwire antennas.
Allows use of coaxial cable between receiver and antenna
Matches antenna to coaxial cable for increased signal
strength.
Sends static charges to ground instead of through the radio.
For receive only 500 kHz to 30MHz.
This new device solves the major problem of
long random wire antennas: noise pickup on the feedline! The
longwire is usually up in the clear high above household noise sources. But the single
wire connecting the antenna to the radio comes down near the computers, light-dimmers,
television sets, fluorescent lights, and other sources of noise. It picks up this noise
and adds it to the wanted shortwave signals.
The Magnetic Longwire Balun lets you use
coaxial cable between the antenna and the radio. The shield of the coaxial cable prevents
pickup of noise and thus gives quieter reception of the desired shortwave signals.
If the coaxial cable is connected directly to the antenna, you lose a lot of signal because of the mismatch in impedance. The cable is 50 ohms and the antenna is several thousand ohms. The Magnetic Longwire Balun is a matching transformer from 50 ohms to high impedance so you get almost all of the signal and still get the quiet reception provided by the shielded cable.
Another advantage of the balun is its protection against "Static Discharge Damage" (SDD) to your radio. If your radio is connected directly to a wire antenna any static charge on the antenna will go through the radio to ground causing loud static crashes and perhaps "very expensive" internal SDD to your receiver! Also, if the radio is connected to the wire antenna, using coaxial cable, the SDD will once again follow the same path to ground, through your receiver, on the center conductor of the coaxial cable.
However, using The Magnetic Longwire Balun provides a DC path for static discharge through the coaxial shield while allowing received signals from the wire antenna to be fed safely down the cable center conductor to your receiver. So static charges go to ground through the cable shield instead of through the radio. There can be no static voltage across the radio terminals. (for static charges only)
