The active part of the coil induces some of the energy into the bypassed part of the coil. This bypassed part causes a short circuit current in itself if it is short circuited by the tap wire. Or, if it is left open, acts as a transformer which transforms the voltage across the active part of the coil possibly to a high voltage. Anyway, the bypassed part of the coil transforms its losses into the active antenna circuit. The best way is to change the coils. The second best way is to use a coil for 8MHz permanently and add a coil to resonate for 5MHz, which is placed perpendicular to the 8MHz-coil. If this additional coil is bypassed, there will be nearly NO losses in this part. A third way would be to bypass a part of the coil with a multitap-bypass, which lowers the loss of the bypass.
