Randy . . The antenna should behave exactly the same provided there is a good balun between the antenna and the coax. The balun's job is to make sure there are no rf currents on the outside of the feeder (the outside conducting surface of the coax outer). If the balun is ineffective or absent, induced rf currents on the outside of the feeder would contribute to the radiated field, and this would alter the antenna pattern. . . In general, the radiated field is the result of all the rf currents on the conducting surfaces of the antenna (and its surroundings, if significant). 73s Alan
