Maxwells original formula were a set of 20 coupled Quaternion equations with 20 unknows. A Quaternion in general is a equation which contains a scalar and a vector. They suggest in one instance the possibility of magnetic monopoles do exist!! Heaviside and Gibbs imposed a heavy restriction on these equations by applying a mathematical cheat the lorenz gauge to dramtically restrict what maxwell had done. So today we are taught the what we know as maxwells equations aew actually in fact the heavyside/gibbs equations.....
