Bill - I have not looked at Maxwell's original paper but I have Poynting's paper on energy flow published in 1884 that originated the Poynting vector. The main difference is that they did not have vector notation in those days, and the equations look a lot more complicated because of that. All the items that we think of as vector components are written out in full. Also, the equations are written in their integral form rather than the neat differential form we are used to nowadays. I do not think there is any essential difference in the theory though. . . . 73s Alan
