I concur. It is a strange beast, but think of it as an appature antenna.
I once remember a vertical-slot antenna coined the "stove-pipe" documented in an old Ham Radio magazine from the 70's. This antenna had a vertical slot in a stove-pipe and this produces horizontal omni-directional radiation.
