ABOUT THE AUTHORFor over thirty one years, R. Harold Kinley, WA4GIB, was employed by the SC Forestry Commission as a radio communications technician and in the final years, regional communications manager for the 19-county piedmont region of South Carolina. As such, he was responsible for the maintenance, installation and repair of all communications-related equipment in the region. He was first licensed as a novice amateur radio operator in 1962—WN4GIB and in 1963 as a conditional licensee—WA4GIB. In 1999 he was upgraded to extra class when the 20 wpm code test was a requirement. Harold has written numerous technical articles over the years. The writing began with regular contributions to the NRI Journal—a bimonthly publication of the National Radio Institute, a home study school based in Washington, DC. He also started a technical column for Mobile Radio Technology (MRT) magazine in 1993 called “Technically Speaking”. This column ran for over ten years. MRT is now known as “Urgent Communications” (UC). Occasionally, Harold still writes for UC magazine. He has also written for other magazines from time to time—Popular Electronics, Electronic Servicing & Technology, EMC Technology and QEX. In addition to magazine articles, he has authored three books, two of which are now distributed by antenneX. These days, he spends lots of time in his basement radio shop/ham shack. After retirement, he has become interested in repairing old vacuum tube radios in wood cabinets. There is something special, almost magical, in making an old “glow-in-the-dark” radio set play again. He also spends time developing nomographs that are useful in doing calculations and conversions for radio/electronic applications as described in several articles for antenneX. And, of course, ham radio is an integral part of his daily life along with visits with all the friends made through the wonderful hobby of ham radio. |
